Updates and Information for Racers

8-1-16
Hello Racers! Here is another update for next weekend’s race:

  • This is a USARA Regional Qualifier; our premier division for this race is the open coed/3 category.
  • Speaking of categories, if we have only one team registered in a masters category, that team will be moved to the open category.  Right now that affects ALL teams that have registered in the masters categories.

Unless another masters team in your category registers,  be prepared to be moved into the open division.  http://goalsara.org/2016-races/krista-griesacker-memorial-ar/registered-racers/

  • Please bring exact change for your USARA license fee. $8.00 or $35 if joining for the year. Cash or checks made payable to USARA
  • Friday August 5th Schedule is as follows:

Team check in 5:30pm-8:15pm
6:30pm - UTM tutorial class
7:15pm Rappel Tutorial

8:30pm team meeting

If you cannot be there on Friday, please let us know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.

  • We will have a pasta dinner available on Friday night on a first come, first serve basis. The cost is $5/person. There are also several fast food and sit  down restaurants in Hamburg (about 15 minutes away). They can be located at the intersection of Route 78 and Route 61.
  •  The race will begin sometime between 4am and 7am on Saturday August 6th. Plan accordingly.
  • Be prepared to carry all your mandatory gear  with you for the entire race. There will be no central TA area to return to.
  • Review the gear list, as there are some changes from previous years.
  • Don’t forget, this is a benefit race for the Civil Air Patrol.  Help us to honor Krista’s memory, and support this search and rescue school by raising some pledge money. We are asking each racer to try and raise at least $50 for this worthy cause. We will be giving prizes to the racer who raises the most money for the school
  • We will also have a 50/50 raffle at check in. You could walk home with some extra cash.

If needed, we will send out a final email next week. Thanks again and we’ll see you shortly!

Hello Racers:

There have been a number of questions etc...regarding the gear, format and expectations involving this year`s Krista Griesacker Memorial Adventure Race. Many of you are already looking for predictable answers, rules and standards on how to attack this race. You may even feel a bit confused, unprepared and anxious.

Well, that`s OK…it is exactly the environment we want to create, an environment of uncertainty and unknown.

You see, this year`s event is designed to create a true adventure.  - “A bold, usually risky undertaking; hazardous action of uncertain outcome”.

An adventure does not start until your plans have gone astray and the &%*#@... has hit the fan. Only then do you find out what you are made of and reap the rewards of accomplishment.

This year we have dedicated the efforts of the event to the true underlying skills of Adventure Racing and the true meaning of Adventure. (It`s a throwback to the early days of the sport.)

Adventure racing`s origins stem from survival training and are about putting racers in unpredictable situations. This means racers must improvise, think on their feet, expect the unexpected and deal with the unknown. I repeat….deal with the unknown.

Successful adventure racing teams look at these obstacles as opportunities. They don`t bicker amongst themselves or blame others for their perceived confusion. They work as a team. They see the confusion as an opportunity to either catch another team or create a larger lead.

There is another thing successful teams understand…the race starts long before the whistle blows.

So, if you are a bit confused and unsure of things – don`t be, it simply means the race has started. Enjoy it. Embrace it. Know that you are not alone and use it to your advantage.

Here is  some advice:

  • The race will be unfolding – you will need to adapt.
  • The gear list has restrictions – you will need to adapt.
  • Your conditions will change – you will need to adapt.
  • Things will happen you do not like – you will need to adapt.
  • You will want to complain – you will need to adapt
  • Things will seem unfair – you will need to adapt.

Remember, this is an ADVENTURE RACE (see definition above)

“Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

― A.A. Milne
