Race Report

Over 100 teams lined up on Sunday October 21, for the 3rd annual running of The Edge Adventure Race. This sprint race covered 20 miles, and teams had up to 6 hours to complete the course. The race benefited the American Red Cross. It was a beautiful day with sunny skies and light winds; making the paddling section on the lake much easier than in years past, when the racers encountered tough headwinds. The field had a great mix of experienced teams as well as those new to the sport.

The dynamic duo course designers, Marc Bress and Steve Herzog, put on a great course this year. The opening event consisted of team captains running across a field to retreive their passport, which had been randomly spread out. It was like a giant easter egg hunt for the captain to find the correct passport, and then return to his/her team mates. Teams then headed out in random directions depending on the order on their passport. Some went foot orienteering, some mountain bike, some canoe paddling, while others hit the team challenges.

This year's team challenges were another racer and crowd pleaser. A giant cargo net; a team stretcher carry; and team work rope activites kept the participants busy. Technical mountain biking trails kept some of the newbies off their bikes more than on, while encountering another team challenge along the race course. In the middle of the woods the teams discovered a volunteer who made them change their inner tube on their bike tire. Bummer for those who did not heed to the mandatory gear list, and forgot their bike tool!

The canoe section on Green Lane Resevoir also had a team challenge where teams had to put their thinking caps on ...brains not brawn led the way on this one. Teams also had choices on the checkpoints to split the team and send one running to get a checkpoint, or to canoe to the location.

Teams who completed the official course in the designated time limit, went out on an addtional foot orienteering rogaine section. The team who go the most points was declared the winner. Those who crossed the finish line after the 6 hour cut off lost all of their rogaine points. Twenty teams made it onto the rogaine course.

From the start of the race, the leaders were head to head to the finish. Team GOALS ARA, Tryad Personal Training, and Berlin Bike (coed 3) and A Donkey's Revenge led the way finishing the course in under 4 hours.

Congratulations to the top winners in their respective categories: GOALS ARA (Coed/3); Benny and the Blondes (Mast Coed/3); A Donkey's Revenge (Male 2); SJ Extreme (Mast Male 2); Y Not Tri (Female 2); Somewhere Near Paterson (Coed/2); Baird Naked (Mast Coed/2); Team Rock (Male 3); Skin the Lame Cat (Mast Male 3); ARMD SJP (Female 3)

A special thanks to Bucks County Outfitters, REI, the Green Lane Park Rangers, The Telford Dive Unit, Wilderness Canoe Outifitters, Green Lane Ambulance, and all the super volunteers who helped to make this event a great success!!
