The Krista Griesacker Memorial Adventure Race
USARA National Qualifier
Check out a first hand race report from
Team Wedali at http://www.wedali.com/GOALS.html
On Sunday August 6, 2006, 38 teams lined up for the third annual running of the Krista Griesacker Memorial Adventure Race. This race was a USARA National Qualifier. The race is held each year at the Civil Air Patrol Hawk Mountain Ranger School property, and is a memorial to a fellow adventure racer. Krista got her start in the out doors in the 1980's as a young search and rescue volunteer at the school. She later got into the sport of adventure racing, participating in many Eco-Challenge races among others. In 1999, at the young age of 29, she was struck by lightening, and killed in the mountains of Wyoming.
This race is a challenge to the human spirit, and a great way to honor the sport.
At 7am, teams started out with a relay run and knot tying challenge. They then bolted into the thick woodland foliage for some overland navigation to remote checkpoints. Sticker bushes, bees, snakes and all the familiar outdoor challenges greeted them in the hot August weather. Great views were had by all who took a second to check out the view at the top of the mountain, before dashing back into the woods and down some steep, rocky terrain for more foot checkpoints. Teams then wound there way back up the mountain for the rappelling and ascending section of the race
It took about 1 hour for the top teams to reach the first manned checkpoint, many of them being only minutes apart. It wasn't long before Team WEDALI from Minnesota started inching into the lead, which it held until the end of the race.
After the foot section, teams returned to the TA and completed an obstacle course before heading out onto the biking section. Rope climbs, balance beams, stream crossing, and water obstacles added to the fun and excitement of the day. Some teams refreshed them selves on the water obstacles, while others smoothly sailed passed them with excellent uses of team work.
The road bike and mountain biking sections began in the early afternoon hours, with temperatures and humidity rising in the Pennsylvania mountains. Thanks to Hammer Nutrition, HEED was offered at some of the TA's for teams to re-juvinate themselves with. The steep fire roads led to some wicked mountain biking trails, with many a brake burning that day.
Off to a canoe portage and a down river canoe section, that left many of the 3 person teams dragging their boats along the river. That is often the downside of a race at that time of year---low water levels. Teams who had done this race last year were grateful that the race directors did not make them put their bikes in their canoes, only adding to the weight and challenge of the "paddle" section.
A road bike completed the course which ended back at the Civil Air Patrol property. Teams were greeted by cheering volunteers, a post race picnic and awards ceremony. The first teams arrived around 3pm in the afternoon, with the last team struggling their way across the finish line way after dark.
Congratulations goes to all of the participants for completing one tough race! Award medals were given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in their respective categories.
The top
coed/ 3 teams are eligible to participate in the USARA Nationals.
Team WEDALI received $400 from GOALS ARA $100 from Zanfel and $100 from Spider
toward their registration fee.

A special thanks goes out to EMS; REI for their bike tech tent and other support; Bucks County Outfitters and ZBSports.com for their awesome gear prizes; Hammer Nutrition and Larabar for providing product samples. USARA, Spider, and Zanfel will help to sponsor the winning teams for the USARA National Championship.
A great thanks to all our volunteers and the Griesacker family for being supportive of this race. The race directors hope to see even more teams out on the course next year!
